Guide to Terms

Organizational: PRT – PHOENIX RISING Transitions Please say PHOENIX, PRT, or PHOENIX RISING Transitions when referring to us. Phoenix Rising is the name of another nonprofit and we want to respect that difference.

Convict and Ex-Convict: These are the preferred terms that students in our projects chose to describe themselves. We use them out of respect because they are self-chosen. These terms were selected after sharing many stories about labels in our classes. We reject terms such as inmate, offender, and ex-offender as others have chosen them.
